Meron is an East African songwriter/performer who grew up partly in the United States. Though hard to categorize, his music is a rhythmic, feel-good hybrid of rock, reggae, and soul, topped off with a dose of world-pop.
In general, his songs vary in being about love, about life, about himself, about others, and the mood and emotions are diverse. Some of them are spiritual, others are serious, some are angry, others are happy, some are hopeful, and most are catchy, smooth and cool.
He is currently preparing his album project “Life On Mars”, doing solo shows as well as performing with the world-class soul/RnB/rock band The Bravos, featuring keyboardist Antoine “Twizz” Roberson.
Having live in Asmara, Eritrea, and then Nairobi, Kenya until the age of 14, he moved to the United States and lived in North Carolina and then Florida. He now resides in the culturally and musically rich city of Philadelphia.
As a child, he spent a lot of time writing and creating, anything from poems, stories, to just random ideas. Whether it was for school or just for fun, he learned to see writing as a creative outlet for his emotions, thoughts, questions, and beliefs. At a very young age he had a passion and appreciation for music and lyrics beyond the norm for his age. Many afternoons after school, he would walk home from the school-bus stop and hear the blaring reggae or dance music from the public buses (the streets were literally full of music). Having six older siblings (and three younger ones), he was influenced by an abundance of musical styles and preferences, but a couple of influences have stuck longer than others.
When asked of his influences, he names Bob Marley & Eric Clapton (although he includes the disclaimer that his music sounds like neither of them). Other artists Meron grew up listening to are UB40, The Bee Gees, Prince, Bob Dylan, Guns n Roses, Outkast, Snoop Dogg, plus all the oldies. His answer to why he enjoys writing songs is that because within a song, you can capture a lifetime or just a moment, an emotion or a plethora of feelings, one thought or the many thoughts that may be running through your mind. Through a song, you can go places that you've only dreamt about, and the beautiful thing being that you can take others with you.
Meron is currently represented by music/media company Vurj Live. The company looks to include Meron and The Bravos in creative and new ways of marketing and distributing music, setting precedent for the new direction of the record industry.
